Richard Ringel is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Pediatric Cardiology Division at Hopkins and is an Attending Cardiologist at the Children’s National Medical Center at George Washington University. He completed the majority of his medical training at the University of Maryland. Most recently he became one of the principal investigators of the Coarctation of the Aorta Stent Trial (COAST), which he sees as a major step for getting a medical device, which can be important for certain patients with congenital heart disease. Outside of medicine, Ringel earned the neighborhood nickname "Farmer Rich" for his hobby of gardening, and landed an exhibit at a local gallery for his other hobby in photography. One interesting moment in Ringel’s life happened in a snow storm in 1976. On his way to a ski trip, Ringel was struck by a tractor trailer going about 35 mph (according to a NY state trooper who was at the scene). Ringel was dragged 100 yards before the skidding truck, hauling steel girders, came to a halt. His favorite quote from the local newspaper: "Somehow Ringel survived.”
