Now in his second year of surgical residency at Johns Hopkins, where his rotations include plastic, cardiac and pediatric surgery, Oscar Serrano was born in Mexico. When he moved with his family at the age of 12 to a small mining town in northern Arizona, the only English word he knew was "apple." Today he's fluent not only in his native Spanish but in English and Italian. Saying he's also "effective" in French and German, he enjoys practicing his language skills in world travel.
