Mustapha Saheed M.D.

With his height and physical presence, Mustapha Saheed admits, “I can never hide.” He had to get used to always being noticed, even when he wanted to blend in. When he was eight years old, Saheed experienced a different “blending in” of sorts -- into his new community of Laurel, Maryland, where he moved from Nigeria with his family. He remains fluent in the West African language Yoruba.

Saheed went onto New York to study at Cornell University. While there, he conducted research in surface structural motifs involved in virus-to-cell interactions with the goal of improving gene therapy. He eventually became a science teacher at a New York City middle school, an experience he greatly enjoyed. He has volunteered extensively in programs that expose disadvantaged youth to science and biology. He also worked as a counselor at Camp Phoenix, a burn survivor camp for children.

When he decided to enter medicine he chose emergency medicine, saying “it's the field that takes care of people that nobody else can or will or wants to take care of.” It was that which attracted him, not only from a public health perspective, but also from a personal goals and moral standpoint.

Saheed is wrapping up his third year as an emergency medicine resident and will be joining the Johns Hopkins faculty when he graduates. In the summer he married his girlfriend Althea after which they enjoyed a nice break in the Napa Valley wineries. While his residency gave him little break time at all, Saheed still managed to catch Judge Judy, one of his favorite TV shows – “You can watch it in only 15 minutes, because there are two cases…and get your guilty pleasure!”
