Luca Vricella M.D.

A native of Italy, Luca Vricella, age 42, received his medical degree from Catholic University School of Medicine in Rome and completed his residency in General Surgery at the George Washington University School of Medicine and in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University. He further specialized in congenital heart surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London before joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 2003. Luca comes from a family of physicians and has always had a fascination with the heart, deciding at age 10 that he wanted to become a pediatric cardiac surgeon.

He is Assistant Professor of Surgery and Chief of Pediatric Heart and Lung Transplantation at Hopkins. His clinical interests include pediatric cardiac surgery, pediatric cardiac transplantation, complex aortic root surgery and adult congenital heart surgery. His research focuses on clinical outcomes in pediatric heart surgery and brain protection in pediatric heart surgery.

Luca and his wife Simona have two children, Tony (age 6) and Margherita (age 11).
