Dr. Charlie Brown grew up in the suburbs of Baltimore and went to Jesuit high school. “I had a great childhood with two fabulous parents and an equally fabulous sister.” He comes from a large, close-knit family.
A year after graduating from Harvard University, he moved to Spain to be a science teacher at the American School of Bilbao. Since then, knowledge of Spanish has served him well for the many Spanish-speaking patients that come through Hopkins.
Charlie came back to the U.S. for medical school at Johns Hopkins. He recalls it being tough and says residency has been a lot more fun. Charlie was an ER resident while ABC was filming, but soon after filming ended he switched departments and is now training to become an anesthesiologist.
“I really enjoy it. Before each operation, I get a small, but intense, amount of time to talk with patients and get them to trust me to take them through surgery safely,” says Charlie. “If patients begin to ‘crash,’ it is my job to stabilize them.”
During medical school, Charlie took some time off and worked for the House Committee on Homeland Security in D.C. It was in Washington that he met his fiancée Marie, through a mutual friend. They are getting married in Rhode Island in August.
While Charlie likes academic medicine, he also enjoyed his time on the Hill and can envision a career that straddles academic medicine and policy. “It will be a fun process, no matter what happens.”
